Charleston Youth Triathlon Training Program

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Charleston Youth Triathlon Program, powered by Blue Sky Endurance and Swim Charleston, is designed to introduce the fun and exciting sport of triathlon to children ages 8-18.  The combination and cross training of swimming, biking and running can further develop youth athletes that specialize in any one of the sports and build high levels of fitness. All levels of participants from first timers to seasoned junior athletes are welcome.  

Our next season begins March 7, 2020

8 Week Program Overview:

  • Weekly practices to include skill instruction on all facets of triathlon, including swimming, biking, running,  transitions, nutrition and bike maintenance

  • Fitness development to prepare athletes for select races

  • Weekly training plans and workout log

  • A safe environment with trained and certified coaches

  • Certified and experienced coaches from Blue Sky Endurance and Swim Charleston will share their expertise and mentor each child on their journey toward a healthy multi sport lifestyle

  • Open to new and experienced athletes.  Coaches will adapt the activities for all levels and develop valuable skills.  

  • Trisuits available for purchase

Program Requirements:  

  • Must be able to swim 75 yards

  • Must have a functional hybrid or road bike and helmet

Coaches bios:

Cathy Sheafor: An educator at heart, Cathy is the Founder of Swim Charleston, a youth and masters swim team, devoted to developing athletes and empowering them to lead.  Swim Charleston sees the value in developing the whole child, focusing on fun, hard work, and learning. She is committed to ensuring youth programs empower youth to succeed.  

Tirion Sheafor: A seasoned triathlete and former college swimmer, Tirion has competed in two half-ironman competitions and more than 2 dozen sprint triathlons.  A preschool teacher and Lead Swim Coach for Level 1 swimmers at Swim Charleston, Tirion believes in coaching the whole athlete with an emphasis on fun, fitness, character building, and toughness.  

Haley Sheafor: A seasoned triathlete and former college swimmer, Haley has competed in two half-ironman competitions and more than 2 dozen sprint triathlons.  A preschool teacher and Lead Swim Coach for Level 1 swimmers at Swim Charleston, Haley understands that children learn best through play. She emphasizes hard work, joy in the process, and the celebration of learning from “failure.” 

Billy Riley:  Has competed in over 50 triathlons, from super sprints to half iron distances, including qualifying for World Championships at the international and 70.3 distances.  Billy was the assistant coach for the Ohio State Triathlon Team (his alma mater) and is currently a coach and professional bike mechanic at Blue Sky Endurance, as well as a special education teacher at Wando High School.
